Statement
Art is simply a part of me and always has been. It comes from my hands, my heart, and my brain. I was first inspired to become an artist when I was a young child. My grandmother came to visit and I drew a kitten for her — you know, the way children do. Hard lines, no real detail… just another dorky child drawing. She took my drawing and essentially said, “no, no, let me show you … ” For the next half hour or so, she held conversation with the adults in the room while she sketched. When she was done, she had drawn a very beautiful kitten. The first thing I noticed was the light, wispy lines… the detail.. the depth. From that day on, I never used a hard line in a drawing unless it really called for it.
Over the years I have done everything from painting in water color and acrylics, dabbling in glass fusing, and I very much enjoy having a burning MAPP flame in the middle of my living room while I make glass beads. Welding is exhilarating — cutting metal with fire? wow! — and reminds me that you can make anything out of anything. From collages, to magnets, molds, wire animals, and melted plastic, the list of things I haven’t dabbled in is shorter than the list of things I have.
My specialty is sculpture. That same grandmother of mine always had projects involving ceramics ready for visits. She cultivated the artist in me from the very beginning. Doing art transports me into a state of meditative bliss; one in which I belong.
